Label Design Packaging The Two Key Elements In Marketing New Products

There are two main components that are used to draw consumers into making a purchase: label design and packaging.  In order for a purchase to be made the product must visually sell itself without this element your product may never make it off the shelf; the value of the product itself may never be seen to consumers without these two elements.   Positive brand exposure leads to purchases which ultimately lead to your company’s growth.

Flexible packaging is just one of the many arenas of product containment that is seeing growth.  Flexible packages offer a wide variety of advantages over other types of packaging available within the industry on whole.  Custom labeling printed directly onto the package is just one of the many improvements that are offered to manufacturers using flexible pouches in product containment.

Graphics, text and labeling information can all be printed directly onto the material chosen to package your product.  Flexible packaging can be designed out of paper or film materials depending on the product itself.   Paper is best used in flexible packaging with products that are solids or powders.  This option is the most economical option and is an affordable barrier for products that don’t require a thicker level of protection.

When packaging gels, liquids or products that have a wet consistency a film packet is a better barrier to use.  Film when used in flexible pouches offers more protection and is more flexible for the twisting and changes in shape that comes with most substances with a liquid consistency.  Both paper and film provide an air tight seal that protects the packages contents as well reducing spoilage and works to create a more tamper resistant option in packaging.

Custom labeling is an option on both materials.  Vibrant graphics, promotional text and valuable product information can all be easily adapted and printed on either paper or film when used for packaging your brand.  Popular product markets for flexible packaging include healthy and beauty products, beverages and condiments.  The size of the package is customizable which makes it a popular option with varying quantities.

Flexible packaging is also a unique method used in sales and marketing.  It is an easy material to attach to magazines, brochures and direct mailers.  It is also the perfect option for trade show, store and promotional samples.  The flexile packages can be attached to other product lines to expose consumers to other options within your brand.

Flexible packaging is a unique method of packaging that offers tremendous benefits to your product from custom labeling to re-sealable enclosure options while continuing to be cost effective.

The Many Benefits To Choosing Shrink Sleeves

The competition amongst brands has become quiet intense.  Businesses need to differentiate their products from the competition.  A creative way that this is accomplished is through shrink sleeve labeling.  Not only are shrink sleeves a full body product design that offers clients custom graphics, depth in color and increase shelf impact.  In this article we will look into shrink sleeve labeling and the benefits they offer over other custom labeling options.

Shrink sleeves may not be the least expensive option in custom labeling however they are durable, abrasion resistant and waterproof.  Shrink sleeves can also be removed from their containers, bottles or containers and be reused.

There are many benefits to choosing shrink sleeves over other custom product labels.  Not only do they offer a full body, custom design they provide clients with high quality graphics.  Shrink sleeves are known to increase consumer demand by up to twenty percent.  Below are the seven key elements associated with shrink sleeves.

  • Shrink sleeves can be applied to containers made of plastic, glass or metal.
  • Materials used to create shrink sleeve labels are damage resistant.
  • Custom shrink sleeve labeling fits seamlessly into several different bottle and container shapes. Shrink sleeves help to accentuate the products natural shape.
  • Shrink sleeves are a key element in creating tamper proof products.  When it comes to tamper resistance there is no better deterrent than custom shrink sleeve labeling.
  • If you are looking to design a label that is effective from all angles the three hundred and sixty degree design of shrink sleeves is the option for your brand.
  • The graphics and design work imprinted on shrink sleeve labels prevents bleeding, fading and smudging onto the product container itself.
  • Shrink sleeves are crucial in a variety of product marketing and promotional opportunities including cross-merchandising and on pack sampling promotions within your brand of products.

There are a variety of industries that have found the key to success comes from shrink sleeve labeling.

When it comes to energy drinks and alcohol custom shrink sleeve labels are a perfect custom labeling option.  Shrink sleeves create a tamper resistant seal that prevents food and beverages from being opened, intentional or not.  The same is true of the pharmaceutical industry.  Shrink sleeves offer a tamper evident protection seal which is uncommon within most custom labeling options.

Cleaning products throughout the house including detergents, soaps and cleansing products benefit from the use of shrink sleeve labeling because of the benefits derived from them.  Not only are shrink sleeves created to withstand moisture they also are good in a variety of temperatures and endure the friction involved in shipping.

Shrink sleeves are perfect for a variety of products.  When creating a new product or product line for your brand consider introducing product using shrink sleeves as an option for your next custom label option.

At Anchor Printing, we take pride in offering our clients cut & stack labeling, pressure sensitive labels, roll-fed labeling, shrink sleeves as well as flexible packaging options. Contact us today at http://anchorprinting.com for all of your product label design, printing and packaging needs.

The Meaning of Colors When Used In Custom Labeling

As product manufacturers the concept of outsourcing is nothing new.  This is so true when it comes to all of the activities outside of product development such as packaging, labeling, marketing, distribution and the list goes on and on. Our focus in this article will be on custom product labeling.  Although manufacturers are able to outsource the designing and manufacturing of the label they need to have the final say.  It is crucial that product manufacturers have a basic understanding of these key elements even down to the affects color has on consumers.

Choosing a combination of colors to create the identity of your brand is vital to its success.  The colors chosen will continue to represent your brand and product lines for years and years to come.  It is essential that the colors used function to create the emotion and feelings that you expect consumers to have when making a purchase.  When this process is done effectively your brand will be recognized by the products label without the use of any words or information; the colors and graphics alone will be enough for people to recognize your brand.

The Symbolism of Color in Custom Labeling

Red is color that represents feelings of passion, love, excitement.  It is a color that attracts consumers and is in fact one of the most popular colors used in custom labeling.  Think about products that incorporate the color red in them.  How do you feel when you see these products?  Whether I am thinking about food or places I enjoy visiting the color red is abundant.  In the restaurants I like the interiors are red, my favorite foods and drinks all red.  Pasta sauces, wines, apples, peppers and more all make me feel new, whole and full of vigor.  This is what the color red does when used within custom labels.

The color blue is often used when trying to create a sense of authority, professionalism and dominance.  This is why many corporate logos use the color blue.  Consider businesses that you consider to be powerful.  What color do you see?  Most likely it is a shade of blue.  From financial institutions to pharmaceutical companies blue signifies trust and control.  It is a color that you can lead and therefore allowing consumers to have the confidence to follow.

If you are looking to represent your product in the most environmentally friendly light possible the color green is your best bet.  The color green offers visualizations of nature and therefore invokes the splendor, lightness and freedom consumers seek when surrounded by the elements of nature.  Calm and growth, if this is the image you seek for your product be sure to use the color green, in a variety of shades within your products label.

In our next installment on custom labeling we will look into the appeal of other popular colors often used in labeling.  Orange, purple, black, white and combinations of colors all say something unique about your brand.  The key to brand success is the understanding of what feelings and images are perceived when using them in custom labeling.

Trends to watch out for in 2016 for plastic packaging

When it comes to packaging, plastic dominates the market beating out metal, glass and paper in the food and beverage category. And there’s no slowing down as the future looks bright with recent economic reports forecasting that the demand for rigid plastic food and beverage packaging and containers will grow at a rate of 5% a year until the total market reaches $5.4 billion in 2017. Flexible packaging is also on the rise, too. Global demand for flexible packaging is growing at an annual rate of 3.4% and expected to reach $248 billion by 2020. Right now, the food industry accounts for 70% of the demand for flexible packaging. Contributing to this significant growth are recent advances in plastics-processing technologies.

With all this projected growth in the next few years, it’s no surprise that this past year the plastic packaging industry was full of exciting innovations that emerged into the market. And 2016 looks no different as PlasticsToday predicts to see more and more of these pioneering trends further develop. Here we present some concepts which companies are implementing using plastic.

Plastic cans

In 2015, we saw a handful of packaging manufacturers targeting the canning industry, making the case for plastic as a revolutionary alternative to the staple metal can. It’s now possible to make the switch from a metal cannery to a plastic packaging company due to technical advances in PET and plastic blowmolding. Plastic packaging manufacturers can now offer a viable alternative to food makers once solely dependant on metal for oxygen barriers and other required preservation techniques.

Last year, PlasticsToday reported on how the Klear Can from Milacron Holdings Corp. (Cincinnati, OH) recently passed a critical food safety test and is undergoing further testing with a number of select prospects. So, expect to read more about this.

Milacron’s Klear Can technology is an ideal alternative to metal cans for fruits, vegetables, soups, meats and other products. It uses the same filling, seaming and retorting machinery as metal cans so minimal downstream investment is required. Manufacturers can also produce/mold cans at the filling site (through the wall operations), be cost competitive to the metal can, and allow brand owners to demonstrate quality of the product to consumers.

Global packaging leader Sonoco (Hartsville, SC) also recently brought to market its TruVue can, made with its proprietary Fusion Freshlock Technology, which consists of a highly engineered, multilayer plastic substrate that makes it transparent and the enclosed product visible to the consumer. It has an easy-open metal lid and metal bottom that consumers prefer on a traditional metal can.

Also, TruVue is the first clear plastic can to withstand the rigors of continuous retort systems without overpressure, performing in high-temperature and high-pressure environments. In addition, the distinctive construction of the TruVue can provides a more uniform heating experience, a quicker retort cycle and greater strength performance throughout the supply chain, compared to competitive formats. The package is non-BPA (BPA-NIA) for food contact.

Intelligent packaging

Consumers today are more tech savvy than ever. Companies are responding to this with intelligent packaging, which makes it possible to connect with buyers through track-and-trace technologies, otherwise known as bar or QR codes. The wine and spirits market is currently a huge adopter of this.

Another factor contributing to this concept is that food and beverage companies are becoming increasingly worried about counterfeit goods, mainly overseas. In the coming years, many companies will likely explore custom product packaging with bar codes and other forms of authentication as significant growth is predicted in the anti-counterfeit packaging (ACP) market.

In a recent report from Allied Market Research (AMR), the ACP market is likely to grow at a CAGR of 16.1% through 2020, reaching $62.5 billion by 2020.

The forecast is revealed in AMR’s new report, “World Anti-counterfeit Food & Beverage Packaging Market- Industry Analysis, Size, Growth, Trends, Opportunities, and Forecast, 2014-2020.”

The report predicts that holograms will hold on to the leading position in overall authentication technology market through to 2020, while radio-frequency identification (RFID) technology exhibits fastest growth at 20.4% CAGR during the forecast period.

Near-field communication (NFC), RFID, smart labels, and smart caps are a few examples of where brand owners are tracking the quality and safety of food products at various points during the supply chain to ensure product integrity.

Recloseable, resealable packaging

Many cost-conscious consumers are purchasing their food in bulk today, which makes the ability to securely reclose the package to keep food fresh critical to eliminate food waste.

Last year, UK-based Pulse Flexible Packaging Ltd. won the Silver award in the Food category of the prestigious 2015 Starpack

Awards with their bespoke pack for M&S eatwell Seed & Nut Mix. The pack comes with a number of high level consumer convenience features, including an easy-open and reclose format, highly visible tamper evidence and good portion control.

The application of Macfarlane’s Reseal It technology to the reverse of the pack allows the consumer to easily open and reseal the pack, allowing for effortless portion control. An additional tear strip, also developed in conjunction with Macfarlane, was incorporated into the tamper evidence feature to ensure the brand owner’s food safety regulations were not compromised and gives additional peace of mind to the consumer.

Also taking home an award last year was a new packaging solution from Bemis Co. (Neenah, WI) using DuPont (Wilmington, DE) advanced materials. Bemis Co. developed a new BelGioioso Mild Provolone packaging solution using DuPont Selar PA and DuPont Bynel in a resealable package. The package is made up of two individually sealed compartments. This transformational package provides consumer convenience by allowing the user to easily peel and reseal the package 20 times or more with fingertip pressure. What’s more, the package is perforated which allows the consumer to easily separate the two compartments without using a knife or scissors.

“High-performance materials add value to packaging in many ways, but especially in protecting food and keeping food fresher and more appealing longer,” said Yasmin Siddiqi, Global Packaging Relationship Manager, DuPont Packaging & Industrial Polymers. “As the packaging industry converges on this global issue, more and more solutions like this resealable system will be required.”

Bemis won a Silver Award in the 2015 DuPont Awards for Packaging Innovation, demonstrating excellence in the Enhanced User Experience criteria.

The Purpose Of Custom Labels In Product Packaging

Product manufacturers, marketing experts, custom product label designers and consumers all view the purpose of the packaging label differently.  The one thing that is a common element between the ways people view package labeling is that it is the one way to tell the difference between products available on the market today.  The difference in the importance of the label depends on the role they play in the product’s production, distribution and marketing process.

Product manufacturers are looking at the expense of the label and how the label affects the packaging of their product.  Marketers are looking at the label and the importance it plays in creating brand awareness and how it draws consumers to choose the product over the competition.  Custom product label designers are looking to create a label that provides the information the manufacturer needs it to while creating something that is graphically engaging.  Consumers look towards a label to provide product information that allows them to make an educated purchasing decision.  The fact is using a custom product label is important for a variety of reasons; choosing the correct label for the product is essential to the products success on the market.

Below are common choices that are available in custom labeling for product manufacturers to choose from.

Pressure Sensitive Labeling: Pressure sensitive labels offer a great deal of flexibility for single label or front and back applications. Manufacturers offer a variety of different substrates and have many types of coatings and laminates that can be used for your application. The label manufacturer’s technical team will ensure that your requirements are met and your application will be a success and meet quality standards.

Shrink Sleeve Labeling: Label manufacturers push the boundaries to become leaders in shrink sleeve manufacturing. Manufacturing capabilities are endless, technical expertise is highly valued and the quality will be determined by who manufacturers the product label. Shrink sleeves offer 360° graphics for all different types of containers and applications. Label manufacturers will use various material options and applications when creating a custom shrink sleeve label.  Shrink sleeves can be manufactured in single cut sleeves or sleeves on rolls for machine application.

Of course not every label available on the market for manufacturers to choose from will be right for your product, marketing standpoint or packaging.  It is essential to have choices.  As a custom label manufacturer the more options you offer to your clients the more likely they are to choose you to design, create and manufacturer custom labels for their products.

Discovering All There Is In Flexible Packaging and Custom Labeling Part 3

In the last two installments on flexible packaging and labeling we discussed stand up pouches, stand up zip-top pouches, press to close pouches, zippered pouches, three sided seal pouches and resealing sliding pouches.  The industry is evolving and therefore the options in flexible packaging are as well.  Many products are choosing to be packaged in flexible packaging because of the benefits in labeling, shipping and more.

When it comes to packaging items such as pet food, lawn fertilizer, grass seed, potting soils and cat litter there are two types of pouches that are popular; in fact the most popular within the flexible packaging industry: side gusseted and quad seal pouches.

Side Gusseted Flexible Pouches and Quad Seal Flexible Pouches

Side gusseted pouches have a fold, or gusset, on either side of the bag where as quad seal pouches are sealed on four corners of the bag which allows for labeling information and graphics on all of the four sides of the pouch.  The pouches are designed in either a single web up to sixty degrees in width or from three separate webs for flexible resealable pouches.  The best option for your application can be determined with the help of the custom label and packaging manufacturer that is helping to create the label and package for your new product.

The characteristics of side gusseted and quad seal flexible pouches are:

  • Press to close packaging, non-resealable
  • Slider option
  • Ideal for palletizing
  • Additional graphics allow companies and brands to market on all sections of the package

There are so many reasons to design a product package using one of the several options available within flexible packaging.  Flexible pouches offer convenience, portability, cost savings and sustainability.p

  • Convenience: Most flexible pouches can be designed with or without the option to be sealed. The package is designed to fit the needs of consumers.  Many consumers use products or consume products in more than one day.  A flexible package with a seal allows it to be reusable.  This creates a convenience other packaging options don’t provide.
  • Portability: With many packages you can such as boxes you can fold the box into itself to reseal it.  This is not necessarily the best option to carry the product around.  If you drop the box the product can spill.  As well as the bag inside doesn’t necessarily lend to the freshness of the product.  When using flexible packaging, consumers can conveniently seal the package to keep the product fresh and contained.  Pouches are also more aesthetic when it comes to display options.
  • Cost Savings: In order to create a package and design a label it is far less expensive than other traditional packaging; in fact up to forty percent can be saved when you use flexible pouches. There is less waste with the overall packaging and custom label designs.
  • Sustainability: Flexible packaging and custom labeling uses less materials then other packaging. This leads to overall lower costs, lower shipping rates and allows for more eco-friendliness.

Discovering All There Is In Flexible Packaging and Custom Labeling Part 2

Within the flexible packaging industry there are a variety of options to choose from.  In our last installment on flexible packaging we discussed stand up pouches and stand up zip top packages. In this article we will further discuss the options that product manufactures find ideal within the packaging and labeling industry.

Three Side Seal Pouches

A three sided seal pouch is a non-resealing option that includes a traditional lay flat pouch.  Once these packages are opened they do not offer a resalable feature such as a slider or zipper. With this option a fill wrap around graphic label option is available.  This type of pouch packaging allows for a quicker manufacturing turn around as they allow for high speed, high volume package manufacturing.

The flexible package is created with a three side seal that allows a consumer to fill the package with the product that is desired.  The final seal is applied by using heat to seal the package.  This option of bag packaging comes in a variety of materials and sizes including customizable options like holes, tear notches or rounded corners.  Consider the follow options when choosing a non-resealable flexible pouch:

–              Gusseted bottoms

–              Rounded corners, tear notches and holes

–              Non sealing after initial opening

–              High speed, multiple lane manufacturing to allow for an incredibly competitive product

Resealing Sliding Pouches

There are a variety of pre made sliding pouches available within the flexible packaging industry.  Side gusseted pouches with slider closures are popular.  Consider the following pouch slider types when looking into flexible packaging for your company’s products.

–              Hooded: A hooded pouch slider is most commonly used in food application of flexible packaging where a high level of sanitation is needed.

–              Exposed: When sanitation isn’t necessary in applications other than food, where a heavier bag where more strength is needed than sanitation an exposed pouch slider is the best option.

–              Power-proof: This type of sliding pouch closure is ideal when manufacturing powders or granulated products.  This closure looks like a small plow and is created to clear a path along the closure in order to prevent particles from getting lodged in the track of the flexible package.

–              “S” Slider: This is a pouch enclosure that is used for the highest retention within the industry.  When it comes to packaging heavier products such as pet food, lawn seed or garden fertilizer an “S” slider is the option most likely to be used.  This is available in exposed style packages.

In the last installment on flexible packaging we will look into the final enclosures that are popular the side gusseted pouch and quad sealing pouch.

  • When it comes to shelf appeal stand up pouches have a high appeal to consumers. Stand up pouches have a high appeal in the competitive display environment.
  • The logistic benefits of stand up pouches make it a far superior type of packaging. Flexible stand up packages reduce the room needed when storing and shipping products as well as minimizing packaging costs and reduces the impact of packaging on the environment.

Stand-Up Zip Top Pouches

  • Press-to-close Pouches

Many products need an option to reseal packaging.  Products that are marketed using stand up press to close flexible pouches include:

  • Processed meats
  • Frozen foods
  • Powdered products
  • Pet foods
  • Zippered Pouches

A zippered pouch option offers great shelf appeal that promotes your products shelf appeal. The zipper option reseals the product keeping it fresh and ready for consumers use.

  • Several zipper features from hang holes to tear notches
  • Side gusseted pouches
  • Stand up pouches with up to two different capabilities

Zippers on flexible pouches keep products airtight and help to meet the strict standards that are being set within the flexible packaging industry.

The Significance of Product Labels Within The Food Industry

Product packaging and custom labeling is an important aspect in marketing a company’s product. This is especially true when it comes to products in the food industry. When it comes to selling a food product it is important to realize that both the products packaging and labeling created for protection, freshness, marketing and compliance with government regulations. Within the food and beverage industry dry products can be filled with in flexible pouches or cartons and liquids in flexible packaging or solid plastic containers.

Food and beverage packaging manufactures need to ensure their clients have defined what they are looking for before they start working. Manufactures should have concrete answers to the following questions before they begin creating a package or label to fit the product.

1) It is important to know the quantity that is going to be sole before designing a package or label for any food product. Custom labeling should be created to decipher between a varieties of product sizes within a brand.

2) What type of packaging materials have been considered when thinking about a package that fits the products needs and the manufacturers wants? Common packaging materials include plastic, aluminum and cardboard. Different materials offer various advantages to the products they enclose. Plastic packaging is perfect for frozen, perishable, snack and bakery goods. Aluminum is a great material for packaging liquids like juice, soft drinks, beer and canned goods that are perishable. Cardboard packaging is a great material for packaging frozen, fresh, perishable and dry food products.

3) Once it has been decided what material will be used for packaging there are questions that need to be answered about shipping and displays. It is important to create a package and product label that represent the product that is being sold before the production of either the package or label for the product is designed and manufactured.

4) After the above has been discussed and decided upon production of the products package and label can begin.

It is important that manufactures have a clear understanding of the product and brand before a custom label and package is created to market and distribute a product. This is the same whether a brand is introducing a new product or a new brand is being introduced to the market. A custom label and package are a huge part of the marketing. It is crucial that attention is given to every detail of a creating a new product from product development, package creation and custom label design in order to have a successfully marketed product.

Basic Principles of Packaging and Label Design

Typical parts of marketing and manufacturing include product production, packaging, and labeling design.  Each plays an important role in ensuring that the product is a success and guarantees success.  It is important in both marketing and manufacturing to be as efficient as possible that companies learn about how the process can be done efficiently in order to produce the best results.

In product packaging and custom label design there are clear principles to follow to ensure success.  There are some key elements that will demonstrate how this can be done effectively.  Answer the questions below to determine techniques to market products more efficiently.

How does the package influence the behaviors of the customer?

When it comes to package and label designs it is important that the consumer’s behavior is influenced in a manner that make them want to make a purchase.  So much attention is placed on making the package more appealing visually when it fact it is more important to make the package have qualities that are appealing to the consumer.  Flexible packaging that allows a product to be resealed for instance is a great way to appeal to consumers.  When a product does not require re-packaging after use it is far more appealing than those that do.  This is a major benefit to using flexible packaging when marketing products that are meant for more than one use.

Does the product and package labeling have a recall appeal?

Any product being marketed should have a recall appeal to consumers.  The product will be competing with others that are in direct competition with them. Therefore a need exists to consider the competition when packaging and labeling a new product.  Consider brand appeal when creating a new product label and package.  All of the products within the brand should have similar characteristics in the product label and package.

If the company brand is known for a certain unique logo then it is important the same logo is used on the custom product label and packaging of any product that is newly introduced to the market.  Where brand loyalty is strong the new product is certain to be recognized and purchased by those with a favorable impression of the company and product brand.

What sets the product apart from the competition in a side by side comparison?

Products will always be compared with those that are similar.  It should be expected that similar products will be placed on a shelf side by side.  In order to gain an advantage it is important that the custom product label and deign that is chosen shows off the edge your product has over the competition.  The label that is placed on the product can also offer specific advantages.  For instance, shrink sleeves when used prevent product tampering, flexible packaging offers the ability to be resealed and so on and so forth.

In order to be confident that the product packaging and custom product label are designed to maximize the benefits of the product follow the rules above throughout the design and production process.
